5-MeO-DALT

5-MeO-DALT, or 5-methoxy-N,N-diallyltryptamine, is a synthetic tryptamine with a methoxy group at the 5-position of the indole ring and two allyl groups attached to the terminal nitrogen. It appeared on online research-chemical markets in the 2000s. The published evidence includes a metabolism study, a review of its limited early clinical record and a later analytically confirmed case involving loss of consciousness and visual hallucinations.

Chemistry and identification

5-MeO-DALT combines the 5-methoxyindole structure with an N,N-diallyl side chain. The allyl groups distinguish it from 5-MeO-DMT, which has two methyl groups, and from 5-MeO-DiPT, which has two isopropyl groups. It is chemically distinct from both compounds.

Pharmacology and available evidence

There is limited direct receptor pharmacology for 5-MeO-DALT. A 2012 review noted that the scientific literature was sparse and that most information about its psychoactive effects came from occasional reports rather than systematic clinical research. The review also discussed a death following a road accident while the person was reportedly under the influence; it was not described as a confirmed fatal poisoning caused by 5-MeO-DALT alone (The recreational tryptamine 5-MeO-DALT: a brief review, 2012).

Metabolism

A 2015 study investigated DALT and 5-MeO-DALT metabolism using rat urine and human liver enzyme systems. The proposed pathways included aromatic and aliphatic hydroxylation, N-dealkylation and N-oxidation. O-demethylation was also observed for 5-MeO-DALT, followed by glucuronide or sulfate conjugation. The study identified CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 as enzymes involved in its metabolism in the experimental systems (Michely and colleagues, 2015).

Clinical case report

A 2022 report described a 46-year-old man who experienced a brief loss of consciousness and visual hallucinations after taking tablets sold as 5-MeO-DALT. Toxicological analysis confirmed the substance in the tablets and in the patient’s plasma. The tested tablets contained other material as well, and the case documents intoxication but does not offer a controlled assessment of the drug’s effects (Loss of consciousness and visual hallucinations related to 5-MeO-DALT, 2022).

Toxicity and research limitations

Clinical evidence remains limited to isolated cases and older reports. There is no controlled human study establishing its acute toxic range, dependence potential or long-term effects. Routine toxicology screens may not detect newer tryptamines, so analytical confirmation is important when exposure is suspected.

Related tryptamines

5-MeO-DALT is related to DALT, 5-MeO-DMT, 5-MeO-DiPT and other 5-methoxy tryptamines. Its N,N-diallyl substitution is the defining structural feature.
