SKU: Bromo-DragonFLY Category:

Bromo-DragonFLY is a highly potent, long-acting psychedelic in the benzodifuran family. It is structurally related to the DOx amphetamines and has strong activity at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. The compound is particularly concerning because its effects can persist for days and it can cause severe peripheral vasoconstriction, tissue ischaemia, seizures, organ injury and fatal poisoning.

Chemistry and relationship to the FLY series

Bromo-DragonFLY contains a brominated benzodifuran ring system and an amphetamine-like side chain. Its two fused oxygen-containing rings give it the distinctive “DragonFLY” structure. It is related by name and broad structural motif to 2C-B-FLY, but the two are different compounds with substantially different pharmacological and toxicological profiles.

Bromo-DragonFLY appeared on recreational drug markets in the 2000s. It has been sold as a psychedelic and has sometimes been mistaken for other substances, including 2C-B-FLY. This confusion has been associated with severe poisoning.

Pharmacology

Bromo-DragonFLY is a potent agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor. It also has strong vasoconstrictive activity, which is not simply an extension of its psychedelic effects. A 2018 laboratory study found that it was resistant to metabolism in the tested human liver systems and acted as a competitive inhibitor of MAO-A, with a submicromolar inhibition constant. The authors noted that the clinical importance of MAO-A inhibition required further investigation (Bromo-DragonFLY metabolism and MAO inhibition study, 2018).

The same study described Bromo-DragonFLY as one of the most potent 5-HT2A agonists in its chemical class, with reported effects lasting up to two or three days. Its resistance to hepatic metabolism may contribute to this prolonged action.

Subjective effects

The PsychonautWiki profile of Bromo-DragonFLY describes a psychedelic experience with strong visual and cognitive effects. Reports often emphasise its unusually long duration, while clinical accounts document serious vascular and neurological complications during prolonged intoxication.

Perceptual and cognitive effects

Reported effects include visual patterning, changes in colour and depth perception, altered thought processes and emotional shifts. Some accounts describe stimulation and increased mood, while adverse reports include confusion, agitation, hallucinations and panic.

Physical and vascular effects

Severe vasoconstriction is a defining medical concern. It can reduce blood flow to the extremities and internal organs, leading to limb ischaemia, tissue necrosis and, in some cases, amputation. Other reported complications include tachycardia, hypertension, sweating, seizures, rhabdomyolysis and renal failure.

Clinical and forensic findings

A fatal poisoning case published in 2009 described an 18-year-old woman who died after exposure to a liquid containing Bromo-DragonFLY. Toxicological analysis identified the compound in blood, liver, urine and vitreous humour; no other drugs of abuse were detected in the principal samples (Andreasen and colleagues, 2009).

A mass-poisoning event involved 29 people who had consumed a product containing Bromo-DragonFLY and 2C-E. All were hospitalised with severe symptoms; some required mechanical ventilation, but all survived (Mass poisoning with 2C-E and Bromo-DragonFLY, 2018).

Other case reports describe prolonged vasoconstriction, digital ischaemia, tissue necrosis and seizures. The onset of seizures may be delayed, and vascular complications can persist after the initial hallucinogenic effects.

Toxicity and research limitations

The clinical evidence establishes that Bromo-DragonFLY can cause fatal poisoning and severe vascular injury. Its long duration and limited metabolism make the course of intoxication difficult to predict. The exact relationship between concentration and severity is not well defined, and many reports involve uncertainty about product identity or co-exposures.

Its risk profile should not be inferred from 2C-B-FLY or other FLY compounds. Despite the similar naming, Bromo-DragonFLY is a distinct substance with a particularly serious record of vasoconstrictive toxicity.

Related compounds

Bromo-DragonFLY is related to the DOx psychedelic amphetamines and to 2C-B-FLY by its fused oxygen-containing ring system. These compounds are not interchangeable.
