CUMYL-BICA is a cumyl-derived synthetic cannabinoid in the indole-3-carboxamide family. Its structure contains a butyl chain on the indole nitrogen and a cumyl group on the carboxamide nitrogen. The catalogue path uses the slug “cumyl-pica”, but CUMYL-BICA and CUMYL-PICA are different compounds: BICA has a butyl chain, while PICA has a pentyl chain.
Chemistry and identification
UNODC identifies CUMYL-BICA as 1-butyl-N-(2-phenylpropan-2-yl)-1H-indole-3-carboxamide. It is an indole carboxamide with a cumyl substituent, a motif used in several later synthetic cannabinoid designs. The substance is listed as a synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist in the UNODC database (UNODC substance record: CUMYL-BICA).
The distinction from CUMYL-PICA is important for analytical work. The compounds share the same cumyl carboxamide group, but differ in the length of the N-alkyl chain. Their names should not be used interchangeably in forensic reports.
Pharmacology
A comparative study of cumyl-derived indole and indazole carboxamides found that the tested compounds, including CUMYL-BICA, acted as potent and efficacious agonists at CB1 and CB2 receptors. Across the compound panel, CB1 EC50 values ranged from 0.43 to 12.3 nM and CB2 values from 11.3 to 122 nM. The compounds generally showed a preference for CB1 activation (CUMYL-derived synthetic cannabinoid pharmacology, 2017).
The same research evaluated selected related compounds in rats and observed cannabinoid-like responses, including hypothermia and bradycardia. Those animal findings support the activity of the cumyl-derived group, but should not be treated as direct measurements of human effects for CUMYL-BICA.
Reported effects
Reliable human information is too limited to establish a characteristic CUMYL-BICA experience. Its receptor activity supports a cannabimimetic mechanism, but no controlled human study has established its subjective effects, duration or clinical presentation.
Severe reactions reported with other potent synthetic cannabinoid agonists include confusion, agitation, seizures and cardiovascular disturbances. These are relevant class-level concerns, not a confirmed case profile for CUMYL-BICA.
Toxicity and research limitations
The sources reviewed here yielded no detailed clinical case series or human metabolism study specific to CUMYL-BICA. Its acute toxic range, metabolism, dependence potential and long-term effects remain uncertain.
Forensic and scientific records should preserve the distinction between CUMYL-BICA and CUMYL-PICA. The latter has a different alkyl-chain length, and results obtained with one compound should not automatically be assigned to the other.
Related compounds
CUMYL-BICA is related to CUMYL-PICA, CUMYL-5F-PICA and other cumyl-derived carboxamides. Its butyl substituent distinguishes it from the pentyl analogue CUMYL-PICA.
